Hey guys,
I've been getting a lot done with the bike in the last couple of weeks and wanted to share some updates and raise a few questions.
I've rerouted the wiring for the BEP3.0 to sit under the gas tank, bought clip ons for a new brake and throttle setup. Purchased a CNC'd top fork clamp, which should be arriving today.
I've got a couple of questions regarding the stock throttle and clutch cable connectors, where were you able to source parts to make these fit with aftermarket components, or did you purchase more universal clutch and throttle cables? I just bought a new clutch cable, so if I need a custom one I can help someone else out with an installed one for a discount.

This should do the job. I just buy replacement cables if needed. I purchased a Vanthill replacement clutch cable which fits with no issue

Returning from a long production and back on the bike... well working on it.
I have an issue after I've rewired everything for new controls. My indicators, lights, etc all work on the new left hand controls that I've wired up.
My issue is on the starter side of things. I've exhausted the search function here and on YouTube with no avail...
Current checklist:
I've got a fresh battery
The starter relay is perfect
All of my grounds are clean, check out perfectly with continuity and are securely fastened
My cylinders aren't flooded
The Clutch Switch is bypassed
The bike is in Neutral
Brake switch is connected
Symptoms:
Turn off the kill switch
Press the ignition... engine cranks
Let go of the ignition... starter turns off, bike dies
Poorly shot video of said issue:
https://vimeo.com/306236005/988e8e79d0
Any guidance is appreciated!
Thanks!

Were the tests in this post (http://www.motobrick.com/index.php/topic,11393.msg99642.html#msg99642) part of the exhaustion?
-
This is great help I’ll give this a try tomorrow morning.
Thanks

After some noodling and unwiring my entire loom... it turned out I had a short in my wires when I accidentally wired the hot starter wire to a ground.
Fried the wire completely. Unraveled everything re-soldered the wires on the switch with a fresh ones, wired everything up correctly, and she sprang to life.
VOLTMETERS are your friend and mine.
Now rebuilding the entire fuel system from the float to the pump... getting the timing set and she should be purring.
-
It's been quite a long road of trial and error.
Finally got a triple tree clamp created that will house my Motogadget Mini
Still on the way, custom short rear sets and really nice seat: https://bit.ly/2GyHziu
So far i've done the following:
- ABS Delete
- Custom SS front brake line
- Rewired the entire bike
- Fitting 7" headlight
- Custom throttle
- Lowering forks to accommodate my riding style
- Engine Tune (plugs, wires, timing)
- Land Rover Metallic Black on the gas tank
(will paint seat and lower faring same color... may do bedliner on the bottom of the faring as it's going to get some debris from rides)
- Ducati Monster 821 Hand Controls and Brake Master Cylinder
- LED Signals
- LED Circuit board bypass
- Rebuilt fuel tank (filter, pump, fuel level sensor, cleaning)

Still to come and looking for any suggestions:
- Deleting separating line in the bottom faring so it looks like one piece
- Muffler
- Painting forks
- Painting kickstand / Center Stand
- Shaft lube
- Tires
- Brakes
- Seat fitment
- Overflow tank relocation
- Lithium Batter Relocation (under seat)
- ECU relocation
- Ignition switch relocation
- First Ride :)
Really happy with my progress in between huge film projects and working on my Land Rovers.
Can't wait to get it out put some hours on the bike.
Getting close!
-
Now just wait for my paint delivery.
Fiberglassing the inside for more rigidity and taking care of some stress fractures.

I really like this, love the upward sweeping line of the rear tail, that combined with the belly pan and the 3 spokes, all flows nicely, would look awesome with something like this if you could get the lines to flow: https://www.caferacerwebshop.com/en/fiberglass-fairing-type-2.html
Keep up the good work.
-
Thanks! That's definitely a can of worms I may look at opening once I get this bike on the road.
Today I'm tackling re-lubing the spline!
-
Had a chance to do some cleaning up as I wait for the last bits.
Decided to try a bronze color on the wheels, and think I am going to land on powder coated nardo grey. The lighter color does so much more for these wheels in my opinion.
Got my motogadget installed in my custom top clamp, adding a few warning LEDs to the headlight once my mounting brackets get in, hid my super loud new horn in the cowl.
I've ordered a Ducati ST4 starter choke control to add to the bars to replace the stock choke, hoping to install this weekend to give my thoughts on this upgrade since I've gone w a fully custom setup.
Need recos on Exhaust, I almost want a straight pipe w minimal muffling. Thoughts?

Nice Build!
-
Thanks bud!
Working on a new NFL commercial project, so won't really have time to wrench until August :/
Can not wait to get this on the road.
-
Working on a new NFL commercial project . . .
How about linking us to some of your portfolio?
-
Just a cross section of some of my work:
http://ian.almostordinary.com/work
It's taking me away from wrenching, but when I have down time this bike is giving me more therapy than any other outlet I've ever had outside of film.

Just a cross section of some of my work:
That Panama Colombia piece is engaging and a pleasure to view. Thanks for posting the samples.

That Panama Colombia piece is engaging and a pleasure to view. Thanks for posting the samples.
Thank you that was definitely a special piece for me.... Love filming more of that, and supplementing advertising to pay the bills... and buy bike parts!
-
Plan on spending the next week thoroughly going through and finally finishing the build.
Over the bit of downtime I've had, I've relocated the Shorai battery, created a metal seatpan that I attached the ECU to, and doing some more cleanup with the overflow tank and rear brake reservoir.
Tidy'd up the front end, thread locked everything (blue), and wired up my motogadget motoscope mini, as well as some motogadget pin lights. Added additional side turn signals flush mounted into the holes on the tank as well.
Redid the entire fuel system (Sending unit, pump, filter, new bosch injectors) as well as the ignition system (plugs/wires)
Next up is getting the timing buttoned up, put the bottom flare back on, wire and mock up rear running/brake light and motogadget pin turn signals, trying out a minimal shorty style exhaust w the 30' k75 connecting pipe and take her on her maiden voyage.

Finally been able to put some hours on the bike... just need to complete the seat and she's on the road for our first ride.
Thanks to the wealth of knowledge on this forum and a lot of trial and error she's almost there!

Looks great!
Nicely done.
I really like the belly pan, is that an original K100 RS belly pan?
I also like your exhaust but would worry about how loud it is, is there any silencing built in?
Cheers
-
Thanks! It’s the stock k75s belly pan. Really accentuates the lines.
The exhaust is a bit loud when the choke is open but quiet enough when the bike is warm.
Haven’t taken it out yet to see if it’s too loud, but there is some silencing built in. Not a ton though.
Hoping to get her out by weeks end and put some miles on the bike
-
That seat line really smooths out the lower angle on the tank that is usually out of place on these bikes. Well done. I wonder if you could mount the radiator cover from a k75 standard bike above the lower fairing. Might look nice and give things more of a finished look there. I like it. The K75S, where the S stands for starbucks.

Maybe K75SB?

I actually tried the radiator cover but the sides seeem I finished since the rest of the body panels cover the sides of the cover. I am looking into making a mesh radiator guard though.
And yes k75ssb lol

What do you mean? Have you ditched the radiator cover?
-
. . . the sides seeem I finished since the rest of the body panels cover the sides of the cover.

I think the meaning is plumbed by translating it like Scottish dialect. It implies that the sides of the radiator cover seem unfinished because they aren't hidden by the side panels, as ah kin it.
-
Thanks Brickdad!
As I'm still a novice rider, I'm hitting that horn button on accident all the time... but definitely want to be heard.. I'll take that suggestion up and look at combining the two...
It's a fantastic horn.
And yes, I was half typing the last reply on the radiator cover... It looks unfinished with the rest of the fairings removed so I opted not to use it... although I do still have it if you're in need of one.
I'll get a rev post once I take it up in the canyons this weekend, so I don't piss of my neighbourhood.

The horn is probably the only part of the bike that hasn't been hacked.
Novice rider on a bike with modified geometry in the canyons? Death wish?
-
it's been a great bike. Can't say the same for this community. Off to my next build. Off to my next forum,
-
You never described how the bike is to ride. It looks cool to me but I wonder about the seating position, and how you might have to be hunched over the way it's set up. Is it comfortable at all?

I think the thread title says it all.

The bike was a a blast to ride. sorry COVID took over life immediately with family in Italy.
Just an update, building another K75.
Grabbed a 95 K75RT that I am converting to a K75S. Learned a lot from the last build and doing this one on another level.
Going with a front USD fork conversion from ThePowerBrick along with a slew of other upgrades that I didn't do on the last build.
Going w the same seat, as it was really comfortable for my riding style.
When I got it, 70k miles from what I could tell in the tear down, it was mostly in the dirt lol.

Current state.
Did a full teardown, but haven't really been documenting as much as I did on the first build, which has allowed me to get the build done faster.

Planning on painting the bellypan, front mudguard, wheels and rear seat BMW Carbon Black which looks bluish in sunlight and carbon fiber skinning the tank.
Also for the guys asking for soundclip.. it was obnoxiously loud.
Going with the same shorty GP exhaust setup, but have three baffling options that I will try out.
When I get to that stage I'll post a few soundclips.
-

Did some posts get deleted that I missed? Reading it all today I saw now reason you felt the need to leave. Maybe I missed something. Your back, so there is definitely SOMETHING I’m missing. But will continue to read from here.
In my younger days I stripped / lowered / modded everything. Since then I got old and fat, and need a faring to hide behind!
-
"Did some posts get deleted that I missed? Reading it all today I saw now reason you felt the need to leave. Maybe I missed something."
I too reread the whole thread and didn't see why his feathers got so ruffled.
Maybe the skin is thicker in your LA (lower Alabama) than his LA (California) 44271 4265249878
I think it was "Novice rider on a bike with modified geometry in the canyons? Death wish?"
Having survived a tank slapper at 100 mph on a "properly engineered" rake & trail, changing the front end geometry is never good idea (IMHO) especially for a self claimed novice rider.
True, he is posting on the fringes - hacking a beloved, wonderful motorcycle we are still riding more than 38? years after it was released, hell, I've had 6!!! and it I can't think there is anything out there that would top it. (do not, ever, ever ride a K1200LT!)
-
Yeah, I was responding to his comment about hitting the horn inadvertently, and his admission to being a novice. The way the front end was lowered and the strap-ons made the front end geometry look kind of scary. I could see him getting into trouble if he took off with the canyon crowd on that bike.
That's the problem with a lot of the cafe builders, they take a heavy bike that is designed for covering large distances at high speed and modify it with little regard for what they are doing to the bike's handling geometry. I don't think there are many who can make the adjustments to keep the bike safe to ride at high speed in the twisties. The fact that there seems to be many cafe customs built, but they are almost never seen anywhere makes me think that they may not be pleasant to ride and end up not being used very often.
-

My memory tells me you're right on both counts.
Anyways, look at almosts k75 for sale thread (#10) Asking 6,100, offered 1,600 and a bit. It's a woozy. After reading it, pick yourself up off the floor and think about it for a coupla minutes, then read the last post again, something about being lucky rather than good.

No posts were deleted from this thread, but in others that I posted there was always unnecessary comments that just were off-putting to building a stronger community. I have built a strong bond/friendship w builders on instagram and facebook, but really like forums as they are a way to document, share and learn from other enthusiasts.
Can't wait to share this latest build, if only to encourage others to take bikes that were slated for life in storage and give them a second chance, in any flavor (cafe, restomod) that they want.
After I sold my last K, I read Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance, and it really made me miss the cathartic space that setting out on a vision brought me. So here I am again, I'll post a full picture recap of this build in the weeks to come. And hopefully it will inspire someone else who stumbles across this post to go on their own journey into enjoying these bikes.
Hoping to put many miles on this next build, I'm more into cruising than carving canyons and just enjoying saddle time... which may be a bit more hunched over the tank for some :)
-
People are protective of their image of history. It is hard to see something that you love get repurposed. But how many K bikes or other bikes for that matter just end up at the scrapyard? I say, good on you for following your dreams (even if I don't share them exactly). Consider: you are making the traditional K bikes all the more valuable. And (hopefully) supplying much needed parts such as fairing pieces and little connectors and things that break or get lost to the rest of us.
But don't take it personally.
-
But nothing increased it's value more than running a truck over it, I spose.
-
man you Australians are so mad.
Got a nice house Im building in Sydney. Swing by when it's done. Have a beer, relax.

Quick update.
Finally got my wheels/tires mounted. so the backend is assembled.
Tank is prepped for carbon fiber skinning, going to skin the cowl for the seat as well.
Bellypan, seat base, gascap all getting BMW Carbon black, which shows blueish in sunlight.

I have a few baffle options that I will be testing out, currently have one inserted that's about 6" long and will likely be the most dB reducing setup.
Awaiting the BMW S100RR front fork setup then she's going to be wired up and fired.
-
Packing for our move back to LA. House hunting is a drag, so taking parts out of boxes for both my CX500 build and my latest K75S.
First start up, just need to get lights, do some paint, and she's ready to ride.

10cc of oil in the cylinders to build up compression, so she's a little smoky. Ran it up to temp yesterday and she's humming now.

Really like the sound this time around w the baffle installed.
-
Thanks for adding your sound clip @almostordinary.
I think no matter what forum you end up on, there are always going to be comments that come across as "I don't like what you're doing".
Mods and corruption applied to original steeds (especially these "Ks") seems to offend many, regardless of worthiness of the changes.
I would comment on exhaust note and how modifications can most frequently allow mostly noise or resonance - its a deep rabbits hole of tech and potential time investment. I would of course defer to my SOP on the subject & that being the best change to your exhaust note comes from insertation of a turbo in there somewhere. I'm reasonably immune to flames having very high quality heat blanket tech going on currently :laughing1: so I'll leave it at that.
-
Ha thanks, I've actually been sharing more w the curated forums on Facebook. I deleted FB 8 yrs ago, but one day randomly found a group for another Honda project and now have a K-group that we share insights and learning. I think the forums across the net are all hurting since there are bespoke global groups now on Facebook, although I do use sites like this and CX500forum as well as mercedes forums to document my builds so I remember what the heck i've done :)
Latest on my new K75 build. It's pretty much all there. Just got a new headlight in. My CX500 build is taking front burner and just snagged a CB750 which Im just going to let sit for a year or so before taking it on.

Really happy with where this build is going. Paint, wiring and some carbon fiber skinning and she's done.
In the middle of closing on a house in LA so hoping to get some shake down runs up here in the PNW before I head back to Cali.
-
Looking nice.
Do you ever cross pathways with the Baggo team that races their various CTX500's at the Salt Flats? I found and sent them a couple of low hour 650 turbo engines complete and I expect they may be racing that in the not too distant future (assuming the salt is okay).
-
not that I know of, but I was reached out to by a guy building a Turbo that wants to take on a hybrid project that I canned that uses a BMW R1150S rear swingarm
