Title: Fitting a RnineT front wheel to a K75 1988
Post by: Flodabo on October 03, 2018, 02:41:05 AM
Good morning,

I hope it's ok to start a new topic. I've searched the forum but could not find any info.

Does somebody have any experience or info/ideas on how to fit a 17" RnineT front spoked(wire) wheel to a K75 from 1988 no ABS? I also have a 1150GS rear wheel but that i heard that it's a simple swap, although I don't know if caliper or brake disk need any modifications in terms of new old parts.
I have the K75 stripped down of any unnecessary parts and plan is to go for a racer/endurance look.
Hope everyone has a nice day outhere, cheers!

greetings...

every component needs attention... all it takes is some material... some tools... some machining skills... some fabrication skills...

Welcome, Flodabo. Tell us about your moto—how long you've had it, how much you've ridden it, how many kms are on it, how well the engine runs. Post some images of it.

Perhaps somebody has done your exact conversion and will chime in here but you can work out what might be obstacles. Some of the items governing the feasibility of your project are the diameter and length of front axle, the width of the proposed rims, the width of the proposed tires, the distance between the current fork sliders, the relationship of the brake rotors on the wheels to the calipers, and the clearance of the proposed rear wheel and its tire to the swingarm. Understanding possibilities is a product of measurement. Measurement of clearances your first task. If you heard that somewhere that the 1150GS wheel is a simple swap, you should track down that reference then develop it to be certain you are not chasing ghosts.

This classic Stuntex videos shows some obstacles and how they were overcome during a K1100 conversion. If necessary, the video can be auto-translated into captions from Russian to whichever language is convenient. Your K75 might constrain your choices somewhat.

You'll probably have to swap bikes to 'find' carburetors.  Or convert from fuel injection ...  :giggles

So those are not carburetors? The 3 thingy under air box?

Air box- air intake hmmm
Any idiot proof bike out there? I need one

As far as the air box is concerned, it is used for collecting and channeling air through filtration and electronic sensors to throttle bodies where air is distributed to combustion chambers. Carburetors mix filtered air and fuel outside combustion chambers; the K75 fuel injection system adds the fuel within combustion chambers based on data incoming from sensors.

In the search for an idiot-proof bike, buying a neglected and non-running K-bike is a perfect choice if riding is not intended and protection from accidents is the goal. Smoke and fire are always possibilities though, as you have discovered; however, a well-run K75 is about as idiot-proof to maintain as a bike can be, if riding is the goal. Idiots still are advised to leave some repair and maintenance—and perhaps all riding—to non-idiots; but they are welcomed as sponsors. :giggles

Hi everyone!
Here’s some updates on my work so far :
Front wheel is on but need to work on axle bushes. I have still to fabricate some brackets for the new calipers. I would like to use aluminum for the brackets, will see.
Fork yoke from Twisted Brothers. strap-ons from Cafe4racers. Original instrument bracket I’ll try to use as bracket for the front fairing.
Have some new Bosch injectors. Do they need some tuning? Will this swap affect idle?
New old k1100lt gearbox with final drive from same model.
Rear wheel fitted. No modifications needed. Except for the final drive lock(cap?) which is from a r1100gs and that one came with a caliper from same bike (or at least same model).
New rear shock and some awesome Pirelli MT60RS.
Motogadget Munit in progress. Looks like a mess but I think I came around most of the big issues. Still need to cut useless wires and relays from old harness. I did not had the guts yet :)
I’m thinking about modifying fuel tank. Give it a more straight line at the base. Will see.
What are your thoughts so far?

And the front fairing. Will need to fabricate some bracket for this cause I can’t find anything on the web that I can modify to fit . I’ll keep that for last maybe.

You've made significant progress. Did the engine of this moto run well before you started remodeling it? Did you ride it much?

I'm pretty sure the upper (pointy) bolts from the original bracket also hold the 'fluid-bloc' in place ...

Hi Laitch
I had bad idle in both cold or warm engine. Had to keep engine on with throttle. Valves?

Thank you!
I’ll have a look into that as soon as I find proper tool to unscrew the top nut on the fork tree so I can get to the bearings(needs to be replaced) and have a look at the “fluid-bloc” too.
Love the guy in the video:))

You should perform a thorough tune up on your used moto that includes valve adjustment, throttle position sensor adjustment and throttle body balance once you have thoroughly cleaned and tightened all electrical/ground connections, cleaned or replaced the air filter, replaced the fuel filter, and verified that the fuel pump works well.

There is no way to tune fuel injectors. They can be cleaned and their o-rings replaced. Be certain their electrical contacts are clean.

I’ve watched some videoclips about what you wrote. As I understand I should do all these 3 steps in the exact order you wrote them down. Is that correct?

Valves and TPS must be done before throttle body balance.

Balancing the throttle bodies is the last thing you do.  It's done after any and all tune up operations like air filter, new spark plugs, injector cleaning, etc. are done.

You'll do the steps in any order I tell you to do them? Will you do other steps in between—like dance steps, tango maybe—if I tell to do them, too? What is wrong with doing what The Mighty Gryphon tells you to do? Do you think it's right he should feel left out? There are principles that govern how tuneups are done correctly. They are available from many sources.

I admire your resourcefulness in modifying your moto to the extent it is currently. Can you explain to me why you modified the moto first before you verified that its engine and engine operating systems weren't junk?

You can always rebuild a K engine. I heard :) or maybe because I know I can do anything if I put my mind to it. Yeah, must be that :)

So here is the main subject of this thread : a cnc machined bracket to make possible fitting the r9t front wheel.  [ Invalid Attachment ]  I’m not sure if I should leave it like it is or painted black. Any thoughts?

Here it is gentlemen. Isn’t she a beautiful lady? :) I want to thank you all for being so helpful and for your time during the last 12 months.  Bike has cleared inspection by Swedish authorities and is now read for DGR ride this weekend!
Thank you so so much!
Now it’s my time to share whatever knowledge I gathered with this build.

Looks awesome Flodabo,

Any chance you could post details of the front axle.  Interested to know if you needed to change bearings, spacers etc and if you had part numbers for those.

Cheers

Hello Shonkster,

I used the K75 axel but had it machined a bit. R9t wheel came with bearings that fit spot on on K75 axel. Spacers from K75 cover the r9T wheel bearing almost perfect so I used those, again machined a bit.
Good luck with your build!

Please verify if the tank was modified to straighten its lower profile and, if so, how that was accomplished.

Hi Laitch
Tank is under a home made carbonfiber cover and in order to have that shape I had to move tank backwards a bit.

Thanks for the clarification. Yours is a thoughtful customization and it can serve to show that fenders can be integrated into a compelling design; there is no particular need to be spewing water, mud and gravel in your wake, up your backside or into the works of the moto.
