Title: Ted Porter drive shaft fit in swing arm?
Post by: restinthesun on August 23, 2018, 08:11:00 AM
Who out there has one of Ted Porter's drive shafts? Any issue fitting it in the swing arm?

I bought one from a chap on here last winter. Didn't fit in the Swing arm at first and was recommended by Ted when I called yesterday to peen off a couple of the corners (see photo). I got it to fit inside, but luckily before I fully reassembled it, I tried to spin the DS on the transmission and it rubbed like hell on the swing arm.

Anyone out there with experience like this and making it work? Do I just need to peen off more?

I'd really like to use it, seems a superior design and just want to keep riding out the summer in the Vermont, but don't want to spend the dog days dinking around with under the bike. Thanks!

i have one. fits fine...BUT..you can't put it in from the back.  the shaft must be put in from the front of the swing arm.  gotta take the swing arm out to install.

i would never grind off corners of a u-joint on a balanced part!!!!!!!!

It's whack out there! Everybody gear up!

Speaking of which, did you whack the rear of the shaft with a mallet to fully seat its u-joint on the transmission output shaft before you experimentally spun it? Seating it should have allowed it to clear the swingarm opening. Porter's EI driveshafts have been out of stock and on backorder for redesign for many months.

What did you use to peen the joint?

My moto's driveshaft won't clear the swingarm's rear opening either and it is OEM. I did the same as mlytle when I was disassembling the drivetrain. At this stage, you should consider doing that, too.
