Title: Motronic ground wire?
Post by: BlueK11LT on June 10, 2018, 04:42:34 PM
Today ive had to tape up a few inches of the wiring leading into the large motoronic plug on the K1100LT because the original sheathing was cracked and split quite badly.
There is a few inches of brown/blue wire sticking out of the wiring with no connector on the end of it.
Is this the ground wire for the motronic that should be connected to the spade terminal on the motronic just above and to the left of the centre of the photo?
thanks

Yes, that would be a static ground for the case of the motronic.

strangely though, but that wire has been disconnected I think most of the time ive owned the bike but doesn't seem to have caused any issues.

greetings...

it will save the motronic if you are hit by lightening riding the squall line (https://www.google.com/search?q=squall+line&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjBnvqAkMrbAhXn7YMKHUMOBiYQ_AUICigB&biw=994&bih=440)...

It doesn't serve any function directly related to the electronics operation of the bike. If you notice the mounting of the motronic it is slightly vibration isolated with rubber mounting so it then has no electrical bonding to the frame. That's the purpose of the wire, to provide a static discharge point for the metal case, nothing more. I've found mine disconnected a few times myself, I just reconnect it and move on.
