Title: K75 / K100 Indicators Not Working - Relay Issue?
Post by: DukeBlade on May 13, 2018, 02:47:09 PM
Hi to everyone on this awesome forum  :euro

I have a 1989 BMW K75s that is giving me a total headache with the wiring and indicators.

I bought it rough, like very rough, and have done a thorough clean up, tank repair and fitted some replacement parts (switch gear, front brake cylinder, throttle cable etc). It all seems to be good, except the indicators.

I tried to fit some Led indicators, and was met with a horrible noise (a buzzing/whine) coming from the relay box. I read that I should have used some resistors on each of the LED indicators, but I didnt want to chop up wires so so bought some normal 12v bulb indicators.

They dont work.  :nono

The indicators seem dead. They worked once, but both the rear ones blinked at the same time. I turned off the bike and now they dont work at all. The front set never worked.

I thought i blew some fuses, so replaced all of them. When I was going to replace them, the 4th (from top) 15A fuse wasnt there (steckdose). See images [size=78%]
Do I need this fuse there? I would imagine so. It was running before i took it apart but havent touched the fuses until now, so it wasnt there when it was running.

My guess is that putting the led indicators on killed the flasher relay. Does that sound about right?

Some other issues:
1- There is a wire that I think is for the indicators that should in theory go into the switch gear, but I dont know where it goes - 3rd image in link

2 - There are some issues with some unconnected connectors that were not connected in. 4th and last images in link.

Any knowledge you can lay on me is so appreciated.

Cheers

Putting in 12 volt LED bulbs will not hurt you flasher relay.  It would be no worse than a standard incandescent bulb blowing or being removed.

I looked up the translation prior to posting here and didnt help me figure out why that fuse was missing and if it should or shouldnt be there.

I know the 12v bulbs wouldnt have broken the relay, it may have been the led's i tired prior to putting in the standard bulbs.

Any ideas why the indicators are not working?

That missing fuse would run power to a socket that runs accessories. Look at the attached illustration from a 1994 K75 Rider's Manual.

When LEDs are substituted for incandescent bulbs in turn indicators, a connection in the flasher relay needs to be cut. The situation is discussed at length in a thread beginning with this post (http://www.motobrick.com/index.php/topic,659.msg31954.html#msg31954). Read it all and you might understand how simple it could be.

The led bulbs would not have caused any harm.  They draw a lot less current than standard incandescent bulbs.

Not knowing what any previous owner may have done I would pull the front sockets out.  If they are original they will be single filament, single contact sockets with two wires on them.  The brown wire should have continuity to ground.  Check for that.  Pull the brown wire off of the socket to do the check so you won't be reading anything except the brown wire.
