Title: K1100LT Odometer Fix
Post by: jayskerdoo on May 02, 2018, 01:49:06 AM
Well, the odometer on my'95 K1100LT decided to crap out on me  :dunno . It was laid up for 5 months during the winter and I'm fairly certain that during that time the little gears inside were destroyed by moisture or something of the sort (maybe the lubrication that comes on them from the factory?).

Anyways, I am familiar with odometer gears, the website that sells these small 4 gears. I'm totally fine with forking over the $85 for a new set since it will most likely be a permanent fix, but I have some questions.

The repair manual indicates that you need to actually remove the whole fairing to take out the instrument cluster. I've heard some folks say that with their k75 they were able to remove the cluster without removing much else of anything. Has anyone had any experience with this on the K1100LT? I'm just wondering if I will be able to access the required bolts and bits to remove the unit from the bike to then go ahead with disassembly and replacement of the gears. I'm not too keen on the idea of taking apart the entire fairing on this bike. . . It seems crazy to have to have to go through all the work that the manual suggests to get at the instrument cluster. . .

Let me know if any of you has any tips or experience, thanks!

I forgot to mention, it didn't FULLY crap out. It logs about .3 miles for every 2 actually miles ridden.

Have you cleaned off the sensor located on the right rear of final drive.?

Not yet, wasn't aware of that. Can you provide some details as to the location and process? Is it an electronic sensor that sends the information on wheel rotation or is it a cable like more traditional motorcycles?

Manual does mention cleaning an inductive sensor near the rear drive but does not provide any further information or instructions

If the speedometer still functions, the problem is internal in the instrument....and most probably the
small gears.....a quite common problem.

Yes, both speedometer and tachometer still function. So cant be the sensor at the rear wheel then? Any info on possibly doing this without removing the fairing?

I have a K75RT and can get the instrument cluster off without removing the fairing.  You need to get under the fairing and reach up through the openings for the forks to get at some of the fasteners.  Patience and ball end Allen wrenches.  You might have to remove the storage boxes to make it easier.

Having said that, my bike is an RT.  I have no idea of what effect the microwave oven, flat screen tv, and other stuff on the LT has on access to the cluster.

On the LT's, you can remove the speedo cluster without total removal of the fairing.
I've had mine off, but I did remove one of the storage buckets(to be able to get my arm in the space).
