a friend of mine works at an apple store and they see lots of problems related to non apple branded chargers, I have seen a couple examples myself. I'm sure there are some decent off brands out there, but....

What ever you decide to do, make absolutely sure it gets switched power. Most of those USB charger outlets draw at least 15-25ma(often more) all the time. They'll kill your battery in about a week. If you leave something plugged into the charger the draw increases to about 500ma. That's a lot.

it would be no big deal if the charger failed, but would be if it fried the phone or other device.

If you are going to stay away from the Chinese stuff then get rid of your iPhone. Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in China. Says so right on the Apple iPhone box.

I installed this 4.2 amp USB inplace of the dummy switch on the console. It's wired to the red rocker switch to the right. It also has a handy voltmeter that is quite accurate. Bought them on wish.com. The rubber tabs in the rectangular hole need to cut away and the USB will slide right in.
-
Have to ask it that will be water proof or at least not short out in case it gets wet? I like it and I think the volt reading is a bonus, I am just concerned about a water issue. Hope that works out for you and nice little upgrade.
-
I would say it is "water resistant" not water proof. The USB has a little rubber flap that will resist water. The switches are for marine use. The switches are yellow=hazard, red=USB and blue=high altitude. When i wash the bike I cover the console with a shower cap or plastic bag (both can be used while riding in rain I suppose). I live in the California desert so rain is not an issue (I don't ride in it anyway).
Cheers.

I have not done the install yet, but I was planning to add 12V and USB power to my bike so I bought a cheap vehicle light bar harness from Walmart. Comes with a switch, 40 amp relay, and inline fuse in a nice pre made harness that I can just shorten up to fit a bike and wire right in :riding:

The socket in that one looks exactly like the one I got off eBay for my DR650... which, once installed, worked for a total of about two weeks.

With Jaycar you do get a warranty. And I've been able to get a replacement or get a refund with a couple of Ebay purchases. If too much time hasn't elapsed it might be worth a try.
Regards Martin.

I have a battery tender already hooked up so I use one of these Battery Minder USB adaptor (https://www.amazon.com/Battery-Tender-081-0158-Disconnect-Smartphone/dp/B00DJ5KEF4/ref=sr_1_2?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1523322791&sr=1-2&keywords=Battery+Tender+081-0158)

Fer fecksake. Rotate it facing downward and tape a cocktail parasol on it to further protect it.
