what is the button on the rightside for?

It prevents the lid from opening if you carrying the top box by the handle.
Push the button.....then you're able to swing the handle a few degrees more and open the lid.

I wonder if this set of instructions (http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/NotesParts/46542307620_1.pdf) will shed some useful light. There's English translation for monolinguists. This pdf is from MAX BMW's parts fiche in the R1100RS section. It seems to be the same box as the K1100's.
