Title: Picked up a new to me 83 K100RS today! Looking forward to all the reading
Post by: Timbox on February 18, 2018, 10:41:54 PM
Hi all, just picked up what I thought was a 87 K100RS until I ran the last seven on the rules page.  Now I think she is a 83, but that is okay, got it for a good price and need to get her back up and running.  She has been sitting in a climate controlled storage shed for the past 10 yrs.

If you are wondering how I missed the yr on the title?  There is no title, have to go the bonded title route but this bike is worth the time and $$.

About me, retired service member (Air Force) currently doing seasonal work and anything else I can slip in while being a care give for aging parents.   Been wrenching on metric bikes for 30+ yrs but never a BMW  so really looking forward to getting her running and road safe.

Yes I like the looks of the bike and really like the fact that it is FI.  I am so tired of working on carbs and I love motorcycles as a hobby.  So I am hoping that this is not a lemon and that she will be a good running bike.

Welcome!  These bikes are about as bulletproof as you can get.  Storage is rough on them, but the members here have a lot of experience getting them back to reliable running shape.

Welcome!  The FI on this bike is really simple, but, after sitting will most likely need complete renewal if fuel was left in it.  These people have good parts (https://www.euromotoelectrics.com/) at a reasonable price.  Good luck.

Definitely not an '83. Or '84 or '85. You can tell by the shape of the saddle and the grab handles for the pillion.

Have fun getting it into shape.

Really?  I was scratching my head over the VIN # coming up as a 83, so I am glad that she is I think a 87.  Besides the VIN on the frame any other place I need to look?  Engine # ect....

Thanks.

Today is a holiday. If you're not at work, kick back and read all of this. (http://bmwmotorcycletech.info/IDnumbrs.htm)

Thanks it is book marked and I will take it a bit at time.  Really itching to get at it, but I know that education on any mew bike or bike maker is always a must.  They don't do the same on all bikes or manufactures...hmmm

Again, thanks for the link and let the reading start!

10th position in the VIN is a "H" so it is a 87!  That helps...thanks for the link and a confirmation on the yr of my Brick

As the owner of an '86 K 100 Really Sweet, congrats!  Might consider redoing the fuel lines, vacuum hoses, etc. Old rubber's no good for anyone!

Yes thanks for the fuel line suggestion, I will be doing all of them.  I started a rebuild thred but it will no be that entertaining, just the fuel system and getting the bike safe for riding.
