Greetings fellow brick riders. I am new to the board and have inherited my brothers 1993 K1100RS. He passed away recently and unexpectedly. It was bought new and as you can see, he got his moneys worth out of it.

Among his other talents he was also quite the mechanic and did all his own maintenance. I chuckle a little when I think of our past conversations. He went through so many tires I even bought him a set for his birthday one year and mailed them to him just for fun. It starts and rides but, since we are coming into the end of the season for my locale I won't be riding it. I do plan to spend a lot of time reading here though in preparation for 2018 and I hope you won't mind my occasional question now and then. I couldn't hold a flashlight to my brothers skills so, a little guidance may be necessary. I am no stranger to bikes and currently have four of my own in the garage now. It will be a little tight but, I will make room for this one because it's "special" to me. :riding:

Welcome. Bittersweet story, thanks for sharing it. First thing you gotta do is ride it for 21 miles so it turns over 200,000.
How about some more pics of the bike? Did your brother keep records of his service? If so, you probably just want to pick up where he left it. If not, you might want to start out by changing all the fluids to give yourself a fresh service baseline.

Sorry to hear of your brother's passing but glad to have you join us.
With that kind of mileage he took very good care of his beemer and must have enjoyed riding it.
I will second Scud's advice about fresh fluids which is what I did after reviewing some spotty maintenance records on mine.
This site is packed full of great info and you will learn a lot from the experiences of others when you first do some searches as the inevitable questions come up. It has helped me keep my K75S in great shape.

but...agree with Scud....first thing to do is to take it out for a short spin to roll over 200k. your brother will look down with a huge grin!

Yeah - that's the type of thing I had in mind. There's something poetic about taking the brother's bike past that milestone. You just know he was watching the odometer on his last few rides. He had to think - "Next time I go out I'm turning over 200,000." It'd be cool to do that right away.

I appreciate the welcome and the sentiments everyone. It's been somewhat of an ordeal and without much warning. He had a year and a half of retirement to enjoy. :dunno2: My first order of business is getting the family back on track and then settlement of his estate. Both of which will take time. I haven't had a chance to go through everything yet but, I did find some of his maintenance records and manuals. Along with the bike were specialty tools, three sets (S, M, L) of bike luggage, the fairing, side panels, belly pan, and spare front and rear wheels. I suspect he had the panels off at the time to run a little cooler in the Florida summer. The wheels he just swapped around as necessary with new tread on them. I will put up some pictures when I can. Right now it's buried behind his other personal belongings that I have to go through as well and time just hasn't allowed it yet. For sure I will get a battery tender on it and then start assessing it overall when time allows. See you in the wrenching and riding index. :2thumbup:

Welcome to the forum. I'm kinda new here myself. There is a lot of good knowledge here.
Sorry to hear about the circumstances under which you came into possession of the bike. It sounds like you have your priorities right. Keep doing the right thing.
