Title: Help with identifying speedo/cluster wiring and connectors? (PFA)
Post by: boostd4 on September 20, 2017, 10:22:30 AM

Moving along with my streetfighter/cafe project.  I have an Acewell instrument cluster I bought and am making plans to wire it up.  In my research, it appears the Marulabs BEP 3.0 is my best bet as they state they worked with Acewell specifically to get speedo/RPM/fuel level inputs conditioned to work with factory wiring.

The hard part is I bought the bike without an instrument cluster.  I'm not sure if the previous owner just cut the wiring/connector out (I assume it was supposed to run up above the triple tree where the cluster is - it's obviously not there now.  I know from looking at the BEP 3.0 instructions that there should be two 12 pin single row connectors for the stock cluster.

If anyone has a picture of these connectors and where they run under the tank it would be extremely helpful.

Also, if they've been removed, does anyone know if these are part of a separate harness I can buy at the dealer?  Or do the wires terminate in many different places?

Here's a couple of pics I've found in my old file. This is from my 93' K75.

Hi Boostd4

Did you find your answer? If not I have my tank off at the moment and can follow the loom and take photographs later today.

I did not find it yet, if you could take a photo of where the wires come out of the loom that would be awesome.

I probably won't have the tank off again until next Sunday.  Too rare weather here in Chicago - usually isn't this nice for riding right now.

Before I put the Twisted Brothers seat on the bike, I could have the gas tank off in 2 minutes.  I had to fab some mounts that are a bit more involved to remove now - probably will take me a good 20 minutes to get the set and tank off.  (worth it, the twisted brother's seat is my favorite part of the bike right now).

Some great pics HERE (http://www.ebay.com/itm/1985-BMW-K100-K-100-RS-RT-LT-MAIN-ELECTRICAL-WIRING-HARNESS-WIRES-LOOM-CABLES/382204484488?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D47507%26meid%3D067d939a1026417a8b438e2d66e21036%26pid%3D100623%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D311635166793&_trksid=p2047675.c100623.m-1)... Should match your moto.

Hi photo of the wiring loom point the speedo wiring is on the left. There's not much to see but if it's cut off it should be obvious. Was the bike running because unless there was some rewiring within the loom it would be difficult to start. Without the speedo plugs it's probably not worth getting the BEP as it needs them for the unit you could end up having to solder it. On the wiring schematic I sent you it shows the colours of all the speedo wiring. You will have to pull the loom apart to find them

Thanks!  Bike starts and runs - the previous owner said he had a custom bike shop "figure it out."  I'm guessing they just took out/grounded/whatever the clutch/neutral start wires.

You could just fit a gps speedo or one which runs off front wheel magnets

I have an Acewell speedo that came with the speed sensor and magnets.  Not a big deal really but I'd like the other features to work too and according to Marulabs info, the speedo, tach, and fuel warning signals are all "conditioned" inside the unit to be wired directly to an Acewell unit like mine.  Easier than jumping through hoops with relays and diodes and such.

I'd also like the turn signal indicators to work.  I don't have front turn signals on the bike (at the moment) so it's not easy for me to see if I left the blinkers on (can't see behind the bike while riding).

I'm Waiting for a Marulab unit to come as well. You might be able to get suitable connectors from a good over the counter electronics store. Take the Marulab in and see if they can source some
