Title: Tiny Lock on my 1985 K100RS
Post by: duddini on September 07, 2017, 04:57:51 PM
Hi all,

I've got my brick torn down a bit to clean my ignition switch (praying that will get the electrical demons to behave), and noticed this small lock on the left side of the steering column (is that the right term ??). It looks like it might be a fork lock, but it would not be accessible with the gas tank on. Anyone know what this is ??

I've added two pictures to help.

Thanks,
Bob

It's a fork lock, as you surmised.  It is accessible with the tank on but not necessarily conveniently.

Hi all,

I've got my brick torn down a bit to clean my ignition switch (praying that will get the electrical demons to behave), and noticed this small lock on the left side of the steering column (is that the right term ??). --Not exactly, but close enough if pictures are included--  It looks like it might be a fork lock, --You are correct--  but it would not be accessible with the gas tank on.  --Are you sure?-- Anyone know what this is ?? Many do, but only a few of us really smart ones know how to lock it... haha  :riding:

Whilst you have that tank off, clean all those connections under there and the frame "earth" ground. I would use Deoxit followed by Nyogel on the connectors and 3M Scotchbrite or emery cloth on the ground lug and terminals.

All these topics are well covered here... search box is your best friend.

It's a fork lock, and it's accessible with everything on, unless your '85 100RS is substantially different from mine.  It's not EASILY accessible, though.

How about posting a photo of just how accessible it looks on your bike, Andy, to help put things into perspective?

Thanks for the answers everyone. I'm in the process of cleaning every connector I can get to as well as every ground (plus other stuff). I've done a fair bit of searching and finding possible answers to my problem, that's why I haven't created a post yet saying "My 1985 K100RS won't start" <grin>.
If the bike still misbehaves after I've gone thru all the suggestions I've found, I WILL post a plea for help, along with a detailed list of everything I have tried so far.

Wish me luck boys, I'm putting the gal together this weekend.

Thanks,
Bob
