Hey everybody, I just thought I'd introduce myself real quick.
My name is Al, and I just bought myself an '85 K100RT.
I've been riding around for a while now on an '82 Honda FT500 Ascot, which is great fun, but like most old UJMs not the best bike in the world for longer trips, which lead me into looking into something bigger.
Never thought i'd end up with a Bimmer though.
I wanted something comfortable for one up touring. Goldwings are too bulky and too old manish for me. Harleys are too expensive and I don't like the stigma.
Searching through the cheaper end of craigslist yielded little until one day I stumbled upon a "mint" K100RT for $900.
"Runs good but looks tired", perfect.
A few days and $800 later I took home my very own BMW.
It's been down a few times, and has over 100k on her, but still runs pretty good for a high mileage old bike.
It's got a few little problems; the brakes need work, some of the dash is inoperable, and a few little oil leaks, but man, 800 bucks is 800 bucks. For now I plan to do a few little maintence things, and then start to tear into it through the winter.
I've already read a lot of helpful info on this site and i'm glad to be a part of it.

Welcome from another Ascot alumnae. They are nice, but there is something about the riding position that makes them unrideable after about 75 miles.
This is the right place for getting the information to keep your "new" Beemer(Bimmers have 4 wheels) in top form. There are a lot of people here who collectively have done almost every job that these great machines may ever need.

Welcome apsco, good to see another new brick owner from Minnesota. I too used to have a Honda Ascot, a 1982 thumper, black. I like it's ability to go over curbs but other than that it really didn't suit me for longer trips as you mentioned.
