Title: Battery Indicator Light is On -- When Ignition is Off
Post by: Kaze on September 13, 2011, 05:58:00 AM
Howdy. This is my first post on this forum.

I have an 83' K100 LT ...stripped down to just a naked K100.
I bought a battery for my bike last week and mistakenly got an "L" when I should have got an "R" and actually plugged it in. In my defense, I was very excited about riding again and my cables are filthy black...but basically...it was just a dumb mistake. Anyway, both the thin blue and thick red wires going to the alternator were melted.

I bought another wire harness off a Net auction and repaired my wiring, then got the correct battery. Power comes on, very happy. But, the BATTERY INDICATOR LIGHT is on even with the key out of the ignition.

I thought perhaps my wiring was faulty (I believe that the thin blue wire I repaired goes up to the gauge cluster if I am not mistaken) but I used a power tester to check the wires on both sides of the connector I used to repair the wires, and the light comes on, indicating that power is going through.

Fear says that when the alternator wires melted, I killed the alternator, but I wanted to pool some opinions. Everything is connected as it was before. What is the proper way to test your alternator without finding out that your bike won't start after a while?

Take it to an auto parts store where they will test it for free.

Thanks, but I live in Japan and nothing is free here. I'm serious, I went to the filling station and asked to borrow a gas can so I could bring gas home...he said "We will rent you a can for $5". Each motorcycle shop I have gone to won't even touch my bike because it is a BMW...and the BMW shop in Osaka went bankrupt in 2009. So this all points to "I must do everything myself".

The bike started up nicely, so my wiring fix worked. And that indicator light went off after writing my question on the forum here. Still, I would like to test my alternator. Any ideas on how I can do this myself?

Sounds like it would be worth a couple bucks to have it checked for your peace of mind or you can get a fairly basic tester that you can use yourself. Any parts supply store, motorcycle or auto repair shop could help you, this is an easy test to do and the equipment is generic. Heck, ride it over to a BMW car place and tell them to test your two wheeled car's charging output  ;D
