Title: transmission overfill
Post by: capecod brick on July 21, 2017, 09:28:41 AM
My 93 k1100lt was shifting clunkier than normal. i used the dipstick as a guide and added fluid. it was 1/4 the way up the stick at first, then added gear oil til it read 3/4 full. I took it for a ride, it was shifting sweet, then I smelled burning oil. there was oil all over the left side of the transmission , muffler and everything aft.  Did I overfill? did something let go?

i limped home , it shifted and ran normal. cleaned up all the oil.

a visual inspection shows no obvious leaks. is there a breather tube?
any ideas?

after reviewing transmission capacities, I am going to drain the rest of the tranny and refill with the specified  volume of oil..

greetings...

over filling can push trans lube out the seal and oil the clutch...

drain it and measure it in... then use the dipstick to verify the level...

itsa good idear to attach proper photos in your posts so we can see what you see...

also... im this case... you can use the olfactory option so our receptors can smell what you smell...

very soon bocutter ed will tell you its 116mm below fill hoe for top of yeeehaaa zone and 126mm below fill hoe for bottom of yeeehaaaa zone...

trust me on this... what he wont tell you is the measurement needs to be taken while the moto is on the centerstand... warm oil... after the moto has been running in gear and off for approx 1 minute...

and thats 1 minute usa... not metric or imperial or canadican...

IIRC fill level is 116-126mm below the fill hole.

If you were 3/4 up the "dipstick" in Johnny's illustration, yes you were way overfilled.  level should just be to the bottom mark, about a quart or so if you drain it completely.
