Hey guys, I have a weird problem that just started occuring.
I was on the freeway and pulled off on an exit. Immediately after I pulled the clutch in to change gears the engine died. The starter wouldn't engage because it was jammed/blocked?
I rolled it backwards couple times in 5th gear and it freed the starter. Next thing you know, theirs an engine nock or something.
Located what I am guessing is coming from the intermediate flange.

Rivets maybe. I believe the '84 has a 6-rivet output shaft and BMW changed to a 12 rivet output shaft in '86 (my guess). Is it my imagination or does the sound disappear right after you blip the throttle?

It's good. I checked. @rbm when I rebuilt the engine the lower part of the engine, I replaced the output shaft. I had a good look and although it was the older style everything look great.

Isolate the sound to either the intermediate housing or alternator by removing the alternator and restart the engine. If the sound persists, it's the intermediate housing components, maybe sprag clutch. If it gets better, its the alternator or possibly alternator drive dog (monkey nuts).

When you say the starter was jammed, did you mean it wouldn't turn, or was it spinning and not engaging the Sprag clutch?
Does the battery idiot light come on and stay on when the engine is running?
It would be interesting to hear what the engine sounds like with the alternator removed. Does the sound change?
Does the sound change when the clutch is pulled in?

The sound does not change when the clutch is pulled in. I meant to say the starter would not turn. So I had to push the bike in Reverse to free it.

It almost sounds like a sound I would hear when I just started up the bike but it would go away when it warmed up. I was guessing that this was caused by the oil being thick and not getting to all the places.

Thanks fir the suggestion. My thought is that vibration caused the bolt to come loose. Not sure why the starter jammed although I think the starter and alternator are connected via gears.

With that screw loosened, I would look very closely at the splines in the drive dog. I had them strip out on my K75RT, letting the dog slip on the shaft. That stops the alternator from working.
